Context & Critical Perspectives

Why should your film be made/why do you want to make your film?

When we were given the task of creating a 3 to 5 minutes I had multiple ideas but decided to make a crime drama based on grief and vengeance. The story follows the main character who’s lost and grief is a main theme and shows his struggles with it. The vengeance aspect of the characters emotional state this is evidenced through the actions of him through out the film and the way that it influences his discussion making and rational thinking. This will show the effects of losing someone and will show what it can do to someone who was once so happy can be so greatly effected in the worst ways. The reason I want make this film is not only tell the story but also to show the effects of the loss on his mental state.

The crime thriller genre is a genre that shows the loss but can neglect the aftereffects of this and my film aims to show this in more detail. The crime thriller is a genre that is often explored in TV shows such as “NCIS” which lightly shows effects of loss on the characters but doesn’t show a lot of the effects caused by sudden loss of a loved one. The genre also shows the way that people commit the crimes and those who work to solve the crimes but also never show the effects these crimes on those who work to solve them. My film shows this and the effects of the loss of a loved one through the use of the main character having both happen in the same crime.

These make my film unique as it explores aspects that aren’t often explored and means that it fills a gap in the market. It means that people can see the true effects of the death and grief on police officers and others who are involved with the crimes directly and indirectly involved. This also allows the people who have never seen the after effects and the way that people deal with the grief cause be the loss. The way that people also view these events can also be changed by the use emotion and the body language the characters express can change the perception of there emotions at the time of a great loss.

The films tone will also be enhanced by the way that it will be in black and white except of one item like “Schindler’s List” with the red coat which would highlight the grief and loss felt. The use of one colour means that it will be eye-catching to the audience and make the particular object stand out form the black and white and give it some importance through out. This will also allow the mood to be influenced by the way that the colour draws the attention to the object and influences the audiences emotion.

Where could it be screened?

To screen my film and get it out audiences there are various different way to do this. One of the ways that I could do this is through the use of YouTube and Vimeo which would allow me to put the finished product out to a wider audience. The open spread of the film will allow people to see it more easily but will be harder to distribute to people as the film would be quite low key on these and would be more available if I put it into a film festival Such as “Aesthetica” in York which would get my film to a wider audience in a shorter space of time. However these festivals may request exclusivity which would mean that I would be unable to upload it to YouTube and submit it to other festivals. “Aesthetica” doesn’t do this but some festivals do. Another festival I could enter into is “The Short Cinema” in Leicester which is a festival focused on UK creators. This festival does have certain entry requirements which mean that the film can be distributed prior but could be a problem when the film comes to be selected the prior release may cause problems. When screening my film I would prefer to use YouTube and Vimeo as they provide a wider platform and allow me full control of the films distribution and also they are the largest platforms for the short films like mine to be released. I would also use the social media pages on Facebook and Instagram to also promote my film and its screening on YouTube and Vimeo to generate more interest.

  1. This is somewhat detailed. I can see that you have though about how your film will be different to others and looked into where these is a gap in the market. You may want to re-consider the black and whit effect with part in colour. After you research how to do this it may be quite a difficult and time consuming task. If you do not do this then just wrote about you change of idea in your reflective journal. This is a learning curve while research is taking place.
